Pools, Spas & Patios
AyrshirePool_1p_SApp.indd 22 Sec1:1
PSP_Annual_2013.indd The primary purpose for this enchanting aquatic feature was not only for
entertaining, but also as a pool for exercise during the winter months. In fact,
the province’s long, drawn-out winter is what inspired the design of this project,
which was built by Ayrshire Pool & Spas of Alberta.
The grotto design allows the client to escape into the womb-like spa amidst
winter’s coldest day as the structure is heated to prevent condensation. The
decagon-shaped, 15-person spa is equipped with swim jets and is illuminated
brilliantly via underwater lights. Candles placed on sconces that are incorporated
into the grotto’s rustic, stone-face wall enriches the welcoming environment with
soft, warm light that shimmers off the grotto’s granite hydraulic ceiling.
An octagonal opening in the ceiling allows bathers to stargaze at night while
a 3.6-m (12-ft) interior waterfall pours into the centre of the spa. A cascading
waterfall also spills across the front of the grotto’s exterior where a glass window
provides an open-air view of the adjacent outdoor spa, nearby swimming pool,
and surrounding deck, furthering the natural appeal of the bathing environment.
In order to create this special retreat for the homeowner, the overall architecture
used a blend of old stone and new contemporary design with emphasis placed on
acoustics, lighting, exercise, and relaxation.
An outdoor bar, change room, showers, and washroom facilities further the
functionality of the space, while a state-of-the art sound system and light-emitting
diode (LED) lights were also added to further the entertaining experience.
This project earned Ayrshire Pool & Spas a gold award in the Pool & Hot Tub
Council of Canada’s (PHTCC’s) 2012 Design & Construction Awards competition.
