GREENEST POOL When an environmentally conscious homeowner from the small community of Georgetown in Halton Hills, Ont., decided they wanted an indoor pool that reflected their ‘green’ lifestyle choices, they turned to Poolscape Inc., An installation of this nature is not common, as the need to balance the requirements for conservation, efficiency, esthetics, functionality, budget and economics can be quite challenging, especially when incorporating several different amenities. However, Poolscape saw this as an opportunity to showcase the latest technologies the pool industry has to offer. To this end, they chose to combine the best elements of an indoor and outdoor pool, with the homeowner’s love for the outdoors and desire to view the hundreds of birds that visit various feeding stations throughout their yard. To do this, Poolscape, in conjunction with OpenAire Inc., installed a glass enclosure with an automatic, retractable roof to house several aquatic and day-spa features, including a fully-tiled chill pool, 13.4-m (44-ft) lap pool, tiled stand up hot spa and steam room. Not only can the features be enjoyed year-round, the enclosure’s all-glass construction captures the beauty of the outdoors and brings it inside. The moment the owner walks outside of the house and into the pool building, a sense of relaxation falls over them, as they escape the stresses of everyday life. The inclusion of a 111 m2 (1,200 sf) underground bunker offered a number of energy-efficient aspects, including the ability to insulate all the plumbing, walls and floor space. It also acts as a barrier that separates the various bodies of water from direct contact with the cold earth. In addition to housing all of the mechanical equipment for the project, the bunker also features storage, change, shower and steam room facilities, toilet and sink amenities and a large work space. The shared-energy geothermal system improves heating/cooling efficiencies for the home and the project, while an automated pool cover helps reduce heat loss through evaporation. Furthermore, the seamless integration built into the equipment and plumbing systems, which include seven variablespeed pumps, were designed to maximize the homeowner’s energy savings. Finally, a 32-zone automation system further increases efficiencies and enables the owner to manage all functions from a touch pad in their kitchen or by remote in the pool area. www.poolsspaspatios.com Pools, Spas & Patios ■ 23 PSP_Annual_2011(1).indd 23 3/16/11 12:09:18 PM 3/4/11 4:53:30 PM
