To meet the sole purpose of the installation, a 4.5- x 9.1-m (15- x 30-ft) freeform, vinyl-lined swimming pool was built to fulfill the homeowner’s desire to create a backyard recreation and entertainment centre, while several of the project’s design elements also catered to this need. For instance, the pool’s size and shape were selected not only for esthetics, but also to maximize the use of space in the restricted residential backyard. As such, the surrounding pool deck, made of grey- and beige-toned interlocking stone, encompasses the entire backyard and provides ample room for several seating and lounging areas to accommodate large get togethers. In the pool’s shallow end, a 2.4-m (8-ft) cantilever in-wall step, complete with air controlled jets, continues this theme by allowing bathers to gather at the pool’s edge to socialize. Two, in-wall pool lights with rotating colour effects, enhances nighttime entertaining. When the party is over, an automatic pool cleaner and maintenance-free salt water chlorination system helps take the chore out of cleaning the pool, while an automation system allows the homeowner to control every component in the backyard from anywhere around the home.
