As the home was located on a slight hill, which created privacy and prevailing wind issues, Tumber & Associates in Orangeville, Ont., installed a number of mature spruce and pine trees to create proper wind and noise buffers and privacy for the new amenity areas that were being created on the property. To meet the couples’ desire of having a ‘plunge’ pool, a small, 3.6- x 7.3-m (12- x 24-ft) fibreglass pool was installed. To provide them with added functionality, while also meeting their exercise requirements, Tumber included two large swim jets in the pool’s deep end, which can be activated via wireless remote. The poolside cabana’s natural-stone finish matches the foundation of the adjacent, century-old barn, while cedar shakes, copper flashing and cupola and custom-forged wrought-iron detail on the shutters and window boxes complete the authenticity. A matching handmade, wrought-iron fence, featuring a grapevine and leaf motif, created by a local artisan, surrounds the entire pool area and furthers the landscape’s overall design continuity. In creating areas for entertaining, dining and lounging, the design took into consideration the existing, old-growth Walnut and Maple trees to make use of their shade in the key sitting areas of the multilevel terraced environment. To tie in with the property’s historic setting, Wiarton flagstone was used to create a large swimming pool terrace, while Ledgerock stone was used to create a kitchen island, complete with a stainless-steel barbecue and refrigerator. The final puzzle piece of this outdoor environment was the installation of a fire pit, which is surrounded by several, conveniently placed sitting rocks.
