Clean lines create a sophisticated look in this residential backyard After recently completing an extensive interior renovation, the homeowner wanted their backyard to reflect the home’s architecture. The initial thought was to install a 4.8- x 9.7-m (16- x 32-ft) pool, which would span the width of the backyard; the resulting ‘L’-shaped design was borne out of necessity, as city bylaws required the installation of a fence that would separate the pool from the house. The home’s contemporary layout, which uses many clean, crisp lines, was extended into the landscape using linear shapes. Also, rather than fencing off the pool, the deck off of the house was gated from the yard, eliminating the need to isolate the 8- x 4.8-m (26- x 16-ft) pool. The ‘L’ portion measures 2.4 x 3 m (8 x 10 ft). The pool has a 2-m (6.5-ft) deep end and features walk-in corner steps equipped with spa fittings for hydrotherapy use, while the retaining wall at the rear of the yard was brought to within 0.3 m (1 ft) of the pool and features a ‘Sheer Descent’ waterfall. Low-voltage light emitting diode (LED) lighting, installed at the base of the rear walls, enhance the nighttime effect. The overall design scheme allows the pool, which is surrounded by a large square-cut flagstone patio, to remain the focal point of the yard. It flatters and complements the landscape and is an extension of the entertainer’s dream, complete with a cabana with bar and TV and space for sun bathing and lounging.
