The entire backyard was due for a ‘face lift’ and in dire need of a new look. In order to incorporate some of the new elements the homeowner wanted to add in the backyard, Hill’N Dale collaborated with the client and other contractors involved in the project to divide specific areas nearby the house for dining and lounging to ensure everything interconnected and maintained a natural appearance. For instance, large pergolas were added to provide shade for two separate patio areas, while a new flagstone path was installed leading to the newly renovated pool area. The 5.5- x 11-m (18- x 36-ft), ‘L-shaped’ pool was an existing feature and due to neglect over the years, it also needed an update. In keeping with the project’s overall natural theme, stone steps were added and the pool’s perimeter was finished with 10-cm (4-in.) stone coping. The addition of a large pool house was also integral to the project, as it houses the pool’s mechanical equipment and provides the homeowner with a much needed kitchenette and sitting area for outdoor entertaining. The partially covered deck, which wraps around the front portion of the pool house, provides additional space for seating and offers picturesque views of the pool and surrounding landscape. It connects to the pool deck via a stone bridge, while on the opposite side, a lower natural-stone patio provides a supplementary lounge area around a fire pit. The main focal point of the backyard, however, is a dramatic rockscape waterfall that sends a trickling stream of water into a meandering stream that flows around the pool house, under the stone bridge and into a large, 0.5-ha (1-acre) pond also located on the property.
