T
he original concrete reflecting pond at a Toronto-area condominum complex had no life to it. The water feature had very little water movement and various hoses were visible to onlookers. Tenants were no longer visiting or relaxing by the water. After 15 years, the condominium corporation decided it was time for a change. Urban Garden Supply Co. Ltd., the general contractor for the project, enlisted Ponds In The City Inc., a Toronto-based designer and builder of natural-looking water gardens and waterfalls, to re-build the condominum pond and transform it into a natural living pond, complete with aquatic plants and Koi fish.
The condominium committee had visions of a pond with crystal clear water, waterfalls, aquatic plants and fish, but also low maintenance requirements and without needing any chemicals. This type of pond would provide an excellent habitat for nature (e.g. birds, dragonflies and butterflies). Most importantly, a living pond would once again entice tenants to go outside and relax in the courtyard. TO START THINGS OFF The project began with the removal of several tons of concrete to expose the natural earth base where the pond was to be installed. The footprint for the new pond was approximately the same as the old concrete one,
